Roman Schatz moved from Germany to Finland almost 20 years ago. This is his book about Finns and Finland.
And as we know, Finns are always curious about what a foreigner thinks of Finland... ;-)
I thought this was pretty accurate:
The yearly rhythm in Finland works much like the manic-depressive disorder: In winter it's cold and dark all the time, people are suicidal, their backs are bent because they keep their eyes to the ground, trying to use up as little mental and physical energy as possible. In summer it stays light for weeks on end. During this short, frantic period people desperately try to absorb as much energy as possible to help them make it through the next winter. Summer in Finland is an intense convulsion, like an epileptic fit: Singles do whatever it takes to find a mate, everybody is wildly determined to enjoy themselves no matter what, and every tiny village puts on its own music, dance or theatre festival.
